Prepping For Winter From The Inside Out

Enjoying the crisp fall weather, but dreading the cold that winter brings? Coats and sweaters will keep you warm on the outside, while apples and pears will build you up from the inside!

The slightly sweet taste of fall fruits are the perfect cool weather snack. Both are loaded with antioxidants and dietary fiber to help reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. They also build your immune system and help keep away those nasty winter colds and flu. Either fruit can be added to almost any recipe to brighten up an old favorite or create something new. They are delicious companions for anything you prepare.

As a snack: Slice up apples and sprinkle with a bit of cinnamon instead of sugar. Cinnamon works with pears as well, but a touch of ginger makes pears really sparkle. You can even enjoy them with a slice of cheese. Don't waste those skins. EAT THEM! The skins are loaded with healthy goodness and add an extra bit of great texture.

There are lots of delicious ways to get ready for winter with apples and pears. Get creative! They are the "secret" ingredient to tasty fall dishes and make EVERYTHING taste better.

Fresh Apple Sauce

Recipes

Slice apples into a pan, add about a ½ inch of water and cook until the apples are soft and can be mashed with a fork.

Stir occasionally for 10 minutes to make sure it doesn't stick. Make sure to add a bit more water if you need to.

Sprinkle in a bit of cinnamon and a dash of sugar for extra flavor.

You can also combine apples and pears for a lighter flavor.

Pair Your Pears (& Apples)

Tips

Add pear/apples to your favorite baked chicken or pork dish for a juicier, more flavorful taste. Enjoy the added texture. It's surprising how fruit makes meat taste better.

Try a Classic Pear Crisp, made with an oatmeal topping. Substitute 1 tsp of honey and ¼ tsp of ginger for crystallized ginger.
